A man who died in a gang-related shooting in Abbotsford on Friday has been identified by police as 28-year-old Navpreet Dhaliwal, who they say was known to police.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) is asking the public for witnesses and video in relation to the homicide.

Abbotsford police responded to a report of a shooting around 12:30 p.m. on Jan. 9 in the 3200 block of Siskin Drive.

Officers found a man suffering from serious injuries, and despite life saving efforts from first responders, police say the man died at the scene.

The homicide appears to be a targeted event, linked to ongoing B.C. gang conflict, according to a Saturday evening release from IHIT.

It said it is releasing the man’s name in hopes of advancing the investigation.

“This was a targeted and brazen shooting that took place in the middle of the day,” said Cpl. Esther Tupper of IHIT.

The agency wants to hear from anyone who was in the area of Blue Jay Street and Siskin Drive on Friday between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to contact the IHIT Information Line.

“If you have information and have yet to speak to police regarding this investigation, please contact IHIT immediately.”
