Provincial police is urging Simcoe, Ont., residents to shelter-in-place while officers respond to an active incident involving potentially multiple armed suspects.

In a news release Saturday, the Ontario Provincial Police said Colborne Street N., Union Street, Young Street and Kent Street are closed for an ongoing investigation.

The OPP did not say what the active incident or ongoing investigation is related to.

Members of the public in the area are asked to seek shelter immediately, lock all doors and windows, close curtains or blinds and proceed directly to their destination if driving, the OPP said in Saturday's release.

Provincial police is also asking residents to not approach or engage with the suspect and to not pick up hitchhikers.

Residents who are not in the affected area are asked to avoid travelling to the area. The OPP said the public can expect to see an increased police presence.

"We recognize the significant emotional impact that receiving a shelter in place can cause," the OPP said in Saturday's release. "The OPP is taking every precaution necessary to resolve this situation."
