Allegedly throwing a traffic pylon from the 14th-storey balcony of a downtown high-rise has landed a Calgary woman a criminal charge.

The woman, 28, faces a charge of mischief causing danger to life after a video was posted online of the incident on Monday.

“The video appeared to show a person throwing a traffic pylon over the edge of a balcony from a high-rise in downtown Calgary,” police stated in a Tuesday news release.

Using information from social media posts, police determined the video was filmed in an apartment building located in between 11th and 12th Avenues on 3rd Street S.E. in Calgary’s downtown.

Police found the traffic delineator pylon, which weighs nearly 13 pounds, on the sidewalk outside of the building, the release stated.

Investigators determined the video was made two days earlier, on Saturday, shortly before 12:30 p.m., and the pylon had been thrown from the 14th floor.

Police say the video has since been taken down.

Officers were able to identify a suspect and arrested a person at a home on Calhoun Crescent N.E., in the neighbourhood of Livingston.

“Throwing any object off a high-rise is incredibly dangerous,” said Staff Sgt. Paul Ralstin of the Calgary Police Service, in the news release. “We are lucky nobody was seriously hurt or even killed.

“By laying these charges, we hope to show how seriously police take crimes that some people think are simply pranks.”

The Calgary woman was charged with one count of mischief causing danger to life. Police did not release the woman’s name on Tuesday.
