After exploding for seven goals against the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday, the Canadiens offence sputtered against the St. Louis Blues in a 2-0 shutout loss on Saturday afternoon at Enterprise Center.
Fresh from being named to the Canadian Olympic team, Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington made 25 saves for the win. At the other end, Jacob Fowler stopped 17 of 19 shots he faced.
Montreal’s power play was kept at bay in a 0-4 performance, including a 1:37 two-man advantage in the second period the Blues successfully weathered. The Blues also scored a short-handed goal.

There was even a Canada vs. Canada robbery with Binnington getting the pad out on future Olympic teammate Nick Suzuki.
Here are the two goals from the Blues.
Jonatan Berggren opened scoring at 10:48 of the first period, beating Fowler with a one-timer blast.
In the second period, Robert Thomas scored shorthanded, while also undressing Ivan Demidov, to give the Blues a 2-0 lead.
But in the end, it was all about Binnington, who the Habs couldn’t solve.
Saturday’s loss was the first in regulation on Montreal’s current seven-game road trip. With one more road game on the sked Sunday against the Dallas Stars, the Canadiens have a record of 3-1-2 since hitting the road Dec. 21.

Mike Matheson was a late scratch on Thursday after taking an elbow from Brad Marchand against the Florida Panthers on Tuesday. He returned to the lineup and played 21:22.
After flashing some high-octane offence in December and the new year, Saturday’s game in St. Louis was a disappointment on the scoresheet and Hockey Stat Cards’ report card, which was light on standout performances aside from the pairing of Lane Hutson and Alexandre Carrier.
Former Blues forwards Sammy Blais, Zachary Bolduc and Alexandre Texier may have been extra motivated coming in, but Binnington shut down any shot at revenge.
There are still three goalies on the roster, and Fowler didn’t exactly do anything against St. Louis to deserve being sent down to the Laval Rocket, even if that seems like the likely scenario. Samuel Montembeault looked like his old self again in Florida, while Jakub Dobes got the win in a chaotic game in Carolina.

The only thing that seems certain is the three-headed goalie situation can’t last like it did during the Montembeault-Jake Allen-Cayden Primeau season.
