Plunging temperatures and strong winds are causing power outages in northern sections of the Greater Toronto Area Monday, following a storm system that brought a night of heavy rain.

As of Monday morning about 50,000 customers are without power across Ontario, according to Tiziana Baccega Rosa, a spokesperson for Hydro One.

“Every outage has its own estimated time of restoration and that may change as crews continue to assess damage,” she told CBC Radio’s Metro Morning.

Hydro One's outage map shows Caledon and areas northwest of the GTA appear to be hit hardest as of 10 a.m. Monday. Along with a strong winter wind, areas north and east of Toronto could see snow squalls at times throughout the day Monday, according to Environment Canada.

The city of Toronto hasn't been affected at this time but residents are dealing with strong winds.

Environment Canada issued a weather warning advising gusts from 70 to 90 km/h could hit Monday morning. A fog warning has also been issued for the city.

Power outages are possible, according to the Environment Canada alert, as well as damage to buildings and trees. Environment Canada said areas with ice accretion from freezing rain will be most vulnerable.

“Secure loose objects. Stay away from fallen power lines,” the warning states.

Cold temperatures return

A cold snap is also coming on Monday, according to Environment Canada meteorologist Ryan Rozinskis.

"We are watching for any residual water on roads freezing with this temperature drop," he told CBC Radio's Metro Morning on Monday.

Toronto saw heavy rainfall on Sunday night.
