"An initial brief, intense snow squall is expected late this morning or early this afternoon along a cold front. A quick five centimetres of snow is expected from this snow squall as well as a rapid temperature drop, leading to icy surfaces," the yellow advisory for Waterloo region says.

"Lake effect snow squalls off Lake Huron will also develop behind the cold front. Widespread blowing snow and blizzard conditions will be the primary concern as northwesterly wind gusts of 70 to 90 km/h are expected."

Environment Canada warns between 10 cm to 20 cm of snow could fall in the area on Monday in Waterloo region and Guelph. That rises to between 20 cm to 40 cm in northern Wellington County.

That means travel could become extremely hazardous and road closures are possible.

Police in Guelph issued a warning on Monday morning on X, formerly Twitter, about reports of icy surfaces.

"We are getting reports of icy roads this morning following last night’s storm. If you have to go out please drive with care and leave extra time," the police service said.

As well, utility outages are possible. On Sunday, there were power outages impacting more than 4,500 Enova customers throughout Waterloo region due to ice and winds.

On Monday morning, Enova posted on its website that crews "worked through the night and have restored power to most customers affected by Sunday’s freezing rain."

"Snow squalls and high winds are in the forecast and more weather-related power outages are expected. Crews are available to respond," the company said.
