B.C.'s police oversight agency is investigating after a woman was killed following a collision with a Surrey police vehicle on Christmas Day.

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) said in a statement that the collision happened around 6 a.m. PT on Thursday.

Officers with the Surrey Police Service (SPS) were leaving a gas station near the intersection of 108 Avenue and 132 Street, close to Whalley Athletic Park, when the collision happened, according to the IIO.

Paramedics took the woman to hospital with life-threatening injuries, and she later died, the IIO said.

The woman wasn't named or otherwise identified, and SPS said in a statement that it would provide no further details while the IIO investigates the case.

The IIO is called in any time police are involved in a situation that results in death or serious harm in B.C. and determines whether an officer has committed any wrongdoing.

Anyone with more information on the crash is asked to contact the IIO.
