Winnipeg police have a suspect in custody after a man livestreamed himself on Christmas Eve threatening to hurt people and waving a vintage firearm around.

Police say they were notified on Wednesday afternoon about a man who posted a video of himself holding a weapon and making threats to harm people. No particular person was threatened, Const. Claude Chancy said.

About two hours after they were first notified, police sent their tactical unit, a canine unit and a drone operator to Winnipeg's Weston neighbourhood, northwest of the inner city.

That's where they arrested a 32-year-old man and charged him with numerous firearms offences.

Police also said they seized a 1916 Lee Enfield rifle — a bolt-action, British-made weapon that dates back to the First World War — and an air-powered Slavia 624 pellet gun, a firearm manufactured in the former Czechoslovakia from the 1950s to the 1970s.

Porch pirate nabbed

A North End resident who spotted someone stealing a package from a neighbour's porch is being credited by police for the arrest of a man accused of stealing a total three delivered packages.

Police say they received a call from a homeowner in the Robertson neighbourhood on Dec. 23 about a theft of a delivered package.

Police arrested a suspect in this case, and two other similar suspected thefts at the corner of Arlington Street and Atlantic Avenue.

Police said a 28-year-old man has been charged with theft and possessing goods obtained by crime.

Gas station altercation

Two people were arrested and charged in St. Boniface on Christmas Eve after a 59-year-old man was bear-sprayed and dragged a short distance during a noon-hour altercation at a Meadowood gas station, police said.

Police said in a statement the incident started as a verbal altercation. The injured man was taken to hospital and treated for injuries that did not threaten his life, police said.

A 33-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman were apprehended slightly over an hour later, police said.
