In Yukon's Ross River, water, heating fuel and groceries run low as temperatures hit –55 C

It's cold across the Yukon but people living in Ross River who are dealing with 50-below temperatures have an extra burden to worry about — running out of water, fuel, and groceries.

Lifelong resident Robbie Dick said the town's fuel and water trucks aren't in service during these frigid temperatures. He said this is putting him in a very serious situation.

"I'm down to two flushes," Dick told CBC News jokingly. "It's been pretty tough."

Dick said he's been without water for a day, and it's forced him to rely on friends, and family, but also his own ingenuity.

"I've been getting a lot of snow from outside just to help with dishes," Dick said.

Dick said he's heard that a truck from the Village of Mayo, about a five-hour drive away, is going to be travelling to Ross River to help supply water and fuel to people, but he says people are in dire straights now.

Dick said there isn't much he or fellow residents can do during these temperatures, so everyone basically stays inside to keep warm and ride it out.

CBC News reached out to Ross River Dena Council Chief Dylan Loblaw for comment but did not receive a response by publication time.

Joseph Albert works at the Dena General Store. He said he too is riding out the cold weather but he's a bit more worried when it comes to the business.

Albert said the truck that normally brings his grocery order hasn't arrived yet, and there's been no indication as to when it will.

"We aren't expecting it," he said. "We were told it's not coming in."

Albert said the shelves at the store are starting to look empty, and if the delivery truck doesn't arrive soon he thinks stock will only last until next week.

Smalls Expediting is the company that the Dena General Store uses to ship its groceries orders. CBC News called for comment but no timeline could be provided as to when the order would arrive in Ross River.
