A 15-year-old and 19-year-old have been arrested in connection with attempts to set fire to Montreal businesses over the past 24 hours, the Montreal police said Tuesday afternoon.

In the first case, at 2:15 a.m., a 19-year-old woman was spotted loitering with a gasoline can near a bar on Brunswick Boulevard in Dollard-des-Ormeaux. She was arrested and released on a promise to appear in court.

Later Tuesday morning, a 15-year-old was arrested and is now under investigation for allegedly arranging arson-for-hire contracts targeting businesses in the city. Police said evidence was seized and the suspect was released while the investigation continues. They are considering other arrests and charges in this case.

“The SPVM is concerned about the situation and is stepping up its outreach efforts to parents and caregivers to reduce the risk of young people being approached with such contract offers,” the force said in a statement. “To this end, we recommend that parents and caregivers familiarize themselves with the platforms young people use, as well as the groups and channels to which they subscribe.”

The force is also reminding businesses to call them immediately in the event of receiving threats.

“Our teams, who have the required expertise, must be informed of your situation in order to assist you,” it said. “The SPVM continues its presence in the field and remains active even during the holiday season to prevent crime.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact 911 or their local police station. Anonymous reports can be filed through Info-Crime Montréal at 514-393-1133 or at infocrimemontreal.ca
