’Tis the season for wishlists.
This one is a little different because these aren’t items you’d find in Santa’s workshop or wrapped up under the tree.
As the holidays approached, we polled the Calgary Flames’ locker room with this question: “If you could take one trait from any of your teammates, what would it be?”
Would it be Matt Coronato’s wicked wrist shot? Would it be Jonathan Huberdeau’s passing precision? Would it be Mikael Backlund’s longevity, Ryan Lomberg’s motor or Adam Klapka’s monstrous frame?

These guys are all gifted, but some were feeling greedier than others.
Here are the replies:
Blake Coleman
“I’ll go with Lomby’s toughness, Matty’s shot, Huby’s playmaking ability and then I’ll go with Backs’ defensive IQ to round it out. Then, I’d make a lot more money.”
Jonathan Huberdeau
“It’s always been speed for me. That’s never been an asset really that I had. So Lomby, I think that’s the guy. He’s fast. There’s a lot of guys that can fly, but I think I’d take the speed of Lomby. He’s the Lomberghini, right? I had the car, but I never had his wheels.”
Connor Zary
“I’d take Matty’s shot. I think that’s an easy one. He gets it off quick and he gets a lot of power on it.”
Morgan Frost
“I feel like Matty’s shot would be an obvious answer. I feel like a couple people will probably say that. But I’ll go with Huby’s passing ability. Playing with him, you just have to get open. Matty and I talk about that a lot. He’s just so calm with the puck and I think he sees a lot of plays that other people don’t. I feel like he has that extra 0.5 seconds that he can hold onto it, where most people would just make that play. But he can wait that extra half-second. I love playing with him.”

Nazem Kadri
“I’ll go off the board a little bit and say Lomby’s physique. He has about 2.5% body fat and not all of us can roll like that, you know? I’d like to take my shirt off a little more.”
MacKenzie Weegar
“There’s a lot of guys in here I could take a few things from. But if I had to pick one, it’d be Naz’s care level. You know, nothing bothers him. It’s just kind of into the back of his head and he goes on to the next shift. Usually, I sit on things a little bit and I get heated. He does care a lot, but it’s maybe just a short memory. And his confidence level, that’s even better. Naz has a lot of confidence, and I could use a little bit of that too. I’d take that.

“But there’s a lot of guys. There’s Huby’s vision. Oh, and Frosty’s hips. I love Frosty’s hips. If you just watch him, coming up the neutral zone on the power play or if he’s winding up, he opens up the hips and he starts going. He has loose hips. If I had a Christmas wishlist, I’d need some of those.”
Ryan Lomberg
“I got two: Huby’s vision, for sure, and Frosty’s hips. He has loose hips. Give me Frosty’s hips and Johnny’s vision and I think I’d be a hell of a player.”
Matt Coronato
“I’m going to give Bahler (Kevin Bahl) a shoutout. Bahler’s defensive stick, I’ll say that. I think he has one of the best sticks around. He’s tall, so he has a long stick, but he’s also just really strong on it. He’s not getting a touch and someone is still going to hold onto it. He’s always knocking pucks off guys’ sticks. Even if maybe a guy has half a step on him, he’s there with his stick. I think we all notice, in practice too, he’s really good with that.”

Justin Kirkland
“Lombo’s physique, we’ll go with that. And I think that ties into how explosive he is on the ice, how fast he is, the constant energy he has.”
Dustin Wolf, proving that puck-stoppers stick together
“I think I would take (Devin) Cooley’s brain, just the way that he thinks. I mean, you hear what he talks about. He reads books. He’s super knowledgeable. He’s dug into all that. I don’t quite do that, so I’d steal that from him.”
Joel Farabee
“That’s a really good question. I would say I wish I had Frosty’s hands. Yeah, he has good hips, but if I tried to skate like that, I’d be in the end-wall and I don’t think I’d want that. So I’ll take his hands instead.”

“Well, I have a good shot already, I’m a good skater, I see the puck well…”

Big smile.
“Who’s the fastest guy on our team, somebody with smooth skating?”
He ponders for a few seconds longer.
“Frosty, I like his skating. I’ll take Frosty’s skating. Loose hips.”
