The suspect in the brutal rape and assault of a Calgary woman who has no memory of the attack said Wednesday he had consensual sex with her.

Kepra Udup Bang told defence lawyer David Nguyen he had met the woman at a family birthday party and they communicated for several weeks via Snapchat before she invited him to her Forest Lawn home.

“We texted each other on Snapchat,” Udup Bang testified.

“She did message me one time. She said that we could meet at her place.”

Udup Bang told Nguyen he didn’t know the exact date or time of day, but that it was nighttime.

“We just went straight to the bedroom,” he said, of his arrival at her residence.

The accused said they sat on her bed and made small talk before making out.

“We started kissing and then we proceeded to have sex,” he said.

Udup Bang, 26, who faces a charge of aggravated sexual assault in connection with the woman’s July 14, 2019, hospitalization, said he was at the complainant’s home for about an hour.

“Did you ever see (her) again?” Nguyen asked.

“No, I did not see her again. I did message her but she did not respond.”

“Did you sexually assault (the complainant)?” Nguyen asked.

“No, I did not.”

“Did you harm (her) in any way?” the lawyer continued.

“No, I did not,” Udup Bang replied.

The woman testified on Tuesday that she has no recollection of the attack that left her unconscious for more than a week and trigged her to lose memory of a full month.

A witness who heard screaming outside her residence near the intersection of 44th Street and 7th Avenue S.E. said she looked out to see a woman being raped and called 911.

When police arrived they found the complaint unconscious, beaten beyond recognition and naked from the waist down.

Forensic testing found Udup Bang’s DNA on her.

Under cross-examination, Crown prosecutor Peter Mackenzie suggested Udup Bang, who was known to drink heavily and experienced bouts of homelessness, happened upon the victim and in a drunken state brutally assaulted her.

“That’s not true,” Udup Bang said.

He wasn’t arrested until this past February when the RCMP DNA databank found a match.

The trial has been adjourned until the New Year so Mackenzie and Nguyen and co-defence counsel Gunntas Sidhu can provide written submissions to Justice Allan Fradsham.

The Calgary Court of Justice judge will hand down a ruling in March.
