ASIRT investigating after Calgary police officer shoots man 'acting erratically' at LRT station

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has been called in to investigate an incident at the Dalhousie LRT station in which a Calgary police officer shot a man who was “acting erratically and carrying a knife.”

The incident happened at around 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

Police Chief Katie McLellan said around that time, bylaw officers called police for assistance with a man who was acting erratically at the northwest station.

During the police response, an officer shot the man. He was seriously injured and transported to hospital, where police say he remains in serious but stable condition. No officers or bystanders were hurt.

“Our officers are regularly faced with incidents that are unpredictable and can escalate very quickly, as did this,” said McLellan.

She said police are trained to deal with situations like this, and most of the time they are resolved peacefully.

There is no further risk to the public, said McLellan, but she understands witnessing an event like this can be deeply traumatic.

“The fact this incident occurred during daylight hours and in a busy area makes it all the more difficult for the public to process. However, I want to assure you that having safe public spaces in our city, including our transit infrastructure, is one of our top priorities.”

She said there is help available to anyone who was impacted by the incident.

Dalhousie LRT Station remains closed while Alberta’s police watchdog investigates.
