Aylmer police arrest man for allegedly suffocating infant known to him

Police in Aylmer, Ont., say a man has been arrested for allegedly assaulting and suffocating an infant known to him.

Aylmer police said Monday that their investigation found the infant had been assaulted on more than one occasion, and that a man had been charged with assault causing bodily harm, suffocation and assault.

The accused, whose identity has not been made public, has been released from custody with the consent of the Crown, police said.

Police did not say when the alleged offences took place, when their investigation began, the age and place of residence of the accused, or how the man and infant were known to each other.

"As this matter is subject to a publication ban, the Aylmer Police Service will not be providing any further details at this time," police said.
