Child critically injured after being struck by vehicle in Surrey, B.C.

A nine-year-old is in life-threatening condition after being struck by a vehicle in Surrey’s Newton neighbourhood Friday afternoon, according to Surrey Police Service.

Police say the collision happened around 2:35 p.m. PT in the 13400-block of 81 Avenue.

The child was taken to a nearby hospital with critical injuries, and police say lifesaving efforts are underway.

B.C. Emergency Health Services says two ambulances were deployed to the scene, where paramedics provided emergency treatment before transporting the child to hospital.

Officials say they are investigating the cause of the crash, but do not believe impairment played a role, and the driver remained at the scene and is co-operating with investigators.

A section of 81 Avenue between King George Boulevard and 134 Street is expected to remain closed for several hours on Friday.

Police are asking anyone with information, CCTV or dashcam footage to contact them.
