Death of 22-year-old man marked as Edmonton's 27th homicide of the year

The death of a 22-year-old man in northeast Edmonton on Saturday has been deemed the city’s 27th homicide of the year, said police.

Just after 8:40 p.m. on Nov. 29, police responded to a weapons complaint in the area of 160A Avenue and 83 Street, said police in a release.

Officers found a 22-year-old man, dead on scene, and found a 53-year-old woman with serious life-threatening injuries.

A 25-year-old man was placed under arrest, and homicide detectives took over the investigation.

Police said the male suspect, injured woman, and deceased man all knew each other.

An autopsy conducted on Dec. 1, determined that Jeremy Poon, 22, died of multiple stab wounds, and his death has been ruled a homicide. The 53-year-old woman remains in hospital.

On Nov. 30, police charged Wesley Poon, 25, with second-degree murder, attempted murder and arson endangering life.

Police didn’t release any details on Poon’s upcoming court hearings.

Last year, according to EPS, Edmonton had a total of 33 homicides. There were 41 confirmed homicides in 2023. This year’s total so far, is similar to what the city endured in 2018 and 2019 when they had 29 and 27 respectively.

Meanwhile, police have concluded their investigation into the death of a 28-year-old man in northwest Edmonton.

At roughly 4:45 p.m. on Nov. 23, officers were doing a welfare check at a home in the area of 157 Avenue and 130A Street, when they discovered a man dead, under what they believed to be suspicious circumstances.

Homicide investigators took over the investigation, and an autopsy conducted on Nov. 27 determined that Ermiya Zerzghi, 28, died of blunt head and neck trauma, and his death was ruled a homicide.

Police said no charges are being laid in relation to the homicide, because the suspect in the case has since died.

Detectives aren’t seeking any other suspects in the case.
