A man has died in hospital after a stabbing at Jane subway station on Tuesday, Toronto police say.

Police said they were called to the station shortly before 6 p.m. for reports of a stabbing and an altercation.

The stabbing took place near a bus bay, police added.

Paramedics took the man with life-threatening injuries to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The suspects fled westbound on Bloor Street, according to police, who did not release any descriptions.

Police said they are continuing to investigate on scene.

Anyone with information is urged to come forward to police.

The TTC said no Line 2 subway trains are stopping at the station due to police activity.

In a statement on Tuesday, TTC CEO Rick Leary said the transit agency was "shocked and saddened" to learn of the stabbing.

"Our thoughts are with the victim's family and loved ones at this difficult time," he said.

Leary said the TTC will help the police however it can, including providing all video evidence.

He said safety of customers and employees is "paramount" on the TTC and he urged customers with information to call police.
