RCMP in Whitehorse have re-opened a stretch of the Alaska Highway and now say it had been closed Thursday morning after a report of a hit and run involving a cyclist.

Police said they received a report around 8:33 a.m. that a vehicle had struck a cyclist in the area of Rabbit Foot's Canyon. The vehicle didn't stay at the scene of the crash, they said in a news release.

Police have released no other details about the incident, but said they are looking for a black Chrysler 300 vehicle "or similar," with front end damage.

They're also asking anybody who sees a vehicle matching that description to not approach it, and call police at 667-5555.

The Alaska Highway had been closed between Two Mile Hill and Centennial Street in Porter Creek. Police said a traffic reconstructionist was on the scene. Police have since said the highway was reopened around 2:45 p.m. local time.

RCMP said officers are still on the highway and people should use caution driving by them.
