Jasper RCMP seeking tips after stranger sexually assaults woman in her home

Jasper RCMP are hoping a misplaced ball cap leads them to a sexual assault suspect.

Police in the mountain town appealed for tips Friday following a sexual assault on New Year’s Day.

According to a news release, a woman reported being assaulted by a man she did not know in her home sometime between 4:30 and 5:30 a.m. The victim had been out with friends near Miette Avenue and Patricia Street in Jasper’s entertainment district around 2:30 that morning. She stopped at a Circle K before heading to her home on Geikie Street and Pyramid Lake Road. 

Police believe the suspect may have followed the woman and her group.

The victim described her attacker as an olive-skinned man, possibly Hispanic, standing around five-foot-six. He has black hair and facial hair and was wearing a grey sweater and Vancouver Whitecaps ball cap, which fell off in the room before he ran off.

RCMP are seeking tips from the public, including anyone with video footage of Miette Avenue, Patricia Street and Geikie Street between 2:30 and 3:30 a.m., as well as Geikie Street between Larch Avenue and Pyramid Lake Road between 3:30 and 5:30 a.m.

Mounties also asked the public not to share any details about the victim out of respect for her privacy. A publication ban would be sought in the case once charges are laid, the news release said.
