What to watch on Netflix Canada, Disney+, Prime Video, Apple TV+ and more: New TV shows and movies in January

Amid the excitement for the start of a new year, there are highly anticipated TV and movie releases, including the return of beloved favourites and completely new entertainment coming to Canada. From Netflix to Disney+ and Prime Video, among other streaming sites, there are several exciting things to watch in January.

Bridgerton is back for Season 4 on Netflix this month, while Tell Me Lies returns for Season 3 on Disney+, Shrinking Season 3 will be on Apple TV, and The Pitt Season 2 premieres on Crave. Additionally, a new series, Steal, starring Sophie Turner, will be released on Prime Video, and The Coppenhagen Test, starring Simu Liu, will be available to stream on StackTV.

What to watch on Netflix: New TV shows and movies

The Rip — Jan. 16

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck star in The Rip, written and directed by Joe Carnahan. It's about a team of Miami cops who discover millions in cash in a stash house. The film's cast also includes Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor and Kyle Chandler.

Bridgerton, Season 4 — Jan. 29

Bridgerton continues with Season 4, Part 1 in January, focused on the romance between Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) and Sophie Baek (Yerin Ha).

"We’ve experienced Benedict through the seasons as a little theme that crops up occasionally now and again," Thompson told Tudum. "To get to spend a full eight episodes digging into him and making a whole symphony about him, it’s great."

What to watch on Disney+: New TV shows and movies

Tell Me Lies, Season 3 — Jan. 13

One of the juiciest TV shows is coming back, with Tell Me Lies Season 3 following Lucy Albright (Grace Van Patten) and Stephen DeMarco (Jackson White) through their spring semester of college, continuing the story of their tumultuous romance. The new season of the series will also show fans what happens after the Season 2 cliffhanger, when Bree (Catherine Missal) hears the recording from Stephen of Evan (Branden Cook) confessing to sleeping with Lucy, just before Bree and Evan's wedding.

Marvel Television’s Wonder Man — Jan. 27

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II plays aspiring actor Simon Williams, who finds out from fellow actor Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley) that legendary director Von Kovak (Zlatko Buric) is coming out of retirement to remake the superhero film "Wonder Man," and they both pursue roles in the film.

Steal (Samuel Dore/Prime Video)

Steal — Jan. 21

Sophie Turner stars in the thriller series Steal, starring as Zara, an office worker for a pension fund investment company. When a gang of thieves bursts into the office, Zara and her friend Luke (Archie Madekwe) are forced to follow their demands.

Canada Shore — Jan. 22

Filmed in Kelowna, B.C., Canada Shore features 10 Canadians from across the country who were put in a house together for a summer of hookups, drama and a lot of partying.

School Spirits, Season 3 — Jan. 28

The beloved show School Spirits is returning for Season 3 as Maddie Nears (Peyton List) is fighting to save Simon Elroy (Kristian Ventura), who's trapped in the afterlife. Expect new dangers as Maddie is forced to confront the truth about her death. New additions to the cast include Jennifer Tilly, Ari Dalbert and Erika Swayze.

Hijack, Season 2 — Jan. 14

Hijack, starring and executive produced by Idris Elba, returns for Season 2, this time taking place on a Berlin underground train when passengers are taken hostage.

Shrinking, Season 3 — Jan. 28

Shrinking continues with Season 3, adding Michael J. Fox to the cast, who we see in the trailer for the season talking to Harrison Ford's character, Dr. Paul Rhoades, at a medical facility. Additionally, Jimmy (Jason Segel) is facing the reality that his daughter, Alice (Lukita Maxwell), will be starting college.

What to watch on Crave: New TV shows and movies

The Pitt, Season 2 — Jan. 8

One of the most highly anticipated releases of the year is The Pitt Season 2, which takes place on the Fourth of July, 10 months after Season 1, and Dr. Frank Langdon's (Patrick Ball) first day back in the ER after rehab. Noah Wyle returns as Dr. Michael "Robby" Robinavitch, along with the beloved ensemble cast, with the addition of Sepideh Moafi.

Industry, Season 4 — Jan. 11

The financial drama Industry returns for Season 4, exploring the dynamic between Harper (Myha’la) and Yasmin (Marisa Abela), both of whom are drawn to the "globetrotting cat-and-mouse game."

"As Yasmin navigates her relationship with tech founder Sir Henry Muck (Kit Harington) and Harper is pulled into the orbit of enigmatic executive Whitney Halberstram (Max Minghella), their twisted friendship begins to warp and ignite under the pressure of money, power, and the desire to be on top," the synopsis reads.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms — Jan. 18

A prequel to Game of Thrones, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms tells the story of two "unlikely heroes," knight Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey) and his squire, Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell). Set when the Targaryens still hold the Iron Throne, "the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends," the synopsis reads.

The Copenhagen Test — Jan. 6

Canadian actor Simu Liu stars in The Copenhagen Test, an espionage series about a first-generation Chinese-American intelligence analyst, Alexander Hale (Liu), who realizes his brain has been hacked.

Family Law (Global)

Family Law, Season 4 — Jan. 8

Family Law Season 4 picks up shortly after the bombshell finale last season, as Abigail (Jewel Staite) has been passed over for equity partnership, while her boyfriend has fallen off the wagon, and Sofia (Eden Summer Gilmore) has written an essay describing her mother's alcoholism in detail.
