Fire on plane's wheel grounds Perimeter Aviation flight in Winnipeg

Thirty-two passengers and three crew members on a Perimeter Aviation flight are safe after a plane's wheel caught fire at the Winnipeg Richardson International Airport Monday morning.

The airline says there was an "on-ground event during aircraft taxi" that happened shortly after 9:30 a.m. Monday, according to an email statement.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada said in a separate statement the aircraft was on the runway when a flight attendant and ground control told them the plane was on fire.

Crew initiated an evacuation, then aircraft rescue and firefighters came and extinguished a fire in the right wheel assembly, TSB said. The damage was limited to the right wheel.

The Dash 8-100 plane was scheduled to leave Winnipeg and arrive in Thompson, Man., with stops in Manto Sipi Cree Nation (also known as Gods River) and Shamattawa.

Perimeter Aviation says no one was injured and all passengers were re-accommodated after a four-hour delay.

The airline says the incident is under investigation.
