The province's police watchdog is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a woman in Toronto Sunday.

In a news release Sunday, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said Toronto police officers were dispatched to a hotel in the area of Colborne Street and Yonge Street around 1 p.m.

According to the SIU, preliminary information suggests a person staying in the building was creating a distubance.

Upon arrival at the building's lobby, officers were allegedly told the 58-year-old woman had returned to her unit, the SIU said.

The SIU added police made their way to the unit, only to find out a short time later that the woman had allegedly fallen from the balcony of the unit.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, the SIU said in Sunday's release.

According to Toronto paramedics, the building was Hotel Cosmopolitan Toronto.

The SIU investigates incidents involving police and civilians that have resulted in serious injury, death or allegations of sexual assault.

The SIU is asking anyone with information, video or photos to contact them.
