Officers located the man on the school grounds and arrested him without incident. He is under investigation for impaired driving, mischief and breach of probation.
RCMP told CBC News the man is known to police.
No one was injured during the incident, police said, and school staff acted quickly to ensure the safety of students.
The investigation is ongoing.
“This unfortunate incident highlights the importance of school safety planning,” said P.E.I. RCMP Chief Supt. Kevin Lewis is quoted as saying in the release.
“Lockdown training and preparedness allowed school staff and students to use this training to respond quickly and effectively, helping to ensure their safety.”
