RCMP in Surrey, B.C., say a police officer has been taken to hospital after a vehicle was reportedly stolen at gunpoint on Sunday afternoon.

Mounties received a report of the alleged armed theft around 3:20 p.m. PT near the 7500-block of 192nd St., Staff Sgt. Duane Honeyman told CBC News in a statement.

A Langley RCMP officer located the stolen vehicle on the road soon after, according to the statement.

"Shortly thereafter a collision occurred between the stolen vehicle and the police car," said Honeyman, who did not say whether a chase ensued.

Surrey RCMP say one officer was taken to hospital and one suspect was treated for minor dog bite injuries after a stolen vehicle and police vehicle collided on Sunday.

Photos of the crash scene reviewed by CBC News show a black sedan wedged between several trees off the side of a road, and a police SUV resting at an angle in a ditch beside it. Both vehicles have visible damage.

The occupants of the stolen vehicle all fled on food but RCMP used police dogs to locate and take them into custody, Honeyman said.

"One suspect was transported to local area hospital and treated for a minor bite by the police dog and has already been released," said Honeyman.

"A police officer was also transported and treated for injuries received."

The incident drew a large police presence, with at least a dozen Surrey Police Service and RCMP officers — along with at least eight police vehicles and one fire truck — visible on the scene before 6 p.m.

Honeyman did not say whether the injured officer had been in the vehicle involved in the collision or which force they were a member of. He also did not answer questions from CBC News about how serious the officer's injuries are, how many suspects had been arrested, or the circumstances of the crash.

"This investigation is still in the early stages with investigators working on it throughout the night," he said, noting further updates are expected on Monday.
