A St. John's judge on Thursday dismissed four counts of sexual assault and one count of sexual interference against Robert Regular, a Conception Bay South lawyer and businessman.

Regular wept openly after Justice Vikas Khaladkar read the decision at Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador in downtown St. John's, to a courtroom with about two dozen people.

All of the counts against Regular, 72, faced involved the same complainant.

The woman was around 12 at the time of the first incident two decades ago, and is now in her mid-30s. Her identity is protected by a publication ban.

The complainant's mother was a client of Regular, who at the time was working to return her to her mother's care from provincial child services.

The complainant also accused Regular of an assault in his law office when she was about 17.

Defence lawyers Rosellen Sullivan and Jerome Kennedy had argued the Crown's testimony was filled with inconsistencies that hurt the complainant's credibility.

Regular was adamant during the trial that the alleged incidents never happened.
