Heavy rain picks up across Ontario, with thunderstorm threat returning Thursday

Much of this week has featured sunny skies and above seasonal temperatures, but now as we inch closer to the weekend, a multi-day soggy setup will bring persistent rain across most of Ontario.

A Texas low moving north is dragging abundant Gulf moisture into the province on Thursday, with as much as 50+ mm of rain possible into Saturday. The result could be some localized flooding, possibly impacting travel with water pooling on roadways.

In addition to the drenching rains will be a risk of embedded thunderstorms later Thursday. Stay alert to the changing conditions in your area.

Once the system departs on the weekend, parts of Ontario could actually see a changeover to wet snow as temperatures cool.

Thursday: Heavy rain picks up, thunderstorm threat returns

Widespread periods of rain will persist across Ontario, as a Texas low scoops up a stream of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico.

The rain started before dawn Thursday morning, with the chance for some embedded thunderstorms possibly enhancing rainfall intensity.

The cold front will then inch into southwestern Ontario Thursday evening, and will continue trekking into the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and Hamilton region through the overnight period.

The greater chance for stronger thunderstorms to occur will be from 6 to 9 p.m. along the Lake Erie shores.

These storms look to be mostly non-severe in nature, but forecasters will keep a close eye on the possible development.

There is however, the chance for off and on scattered showers throughout the day, and once again on the backside of the system during the afternoon and evening hours on Friday.

Winds will also pick up on Friday night, with showers lingering into Saturday morning across the GTA, lasting longer across parts of eastern Ontario before gradually tapering off in the afternoon.

Across much of southern Ontario, between 30-50 mm of rain is expected through Saturday, with even heavier amounts across the northeast, with as much as 50-75 mm possible.

In true Ontario spring fashion, as the system departs Saturday, a changeover to wet snow is likely over northeastern sections, and even across the higher elevations of southern Ontario as cooler temperatures prevail.

Sunday will be cloudy with sunny breaks possible, but also a risk for a period of showers at times. Abundant sunshine and pleasant conditions will take hold for early next week, as temperatures bump back up several degrees above seasonal. Another shot of cooler weather is then expected for a few days next weekend.
