Police tape surrounded a section of a Lloydminster, Sask., campground, blocking off debris and two damaged RVs on Saturday evening — one of which had front-ended a tree.

The scene resulted from a man stealing an occupied RV Saturday evening, charging it toward an RCMP officer, then crashing the vehicle before being arrested. The incident injured "several" civilians and the officer, according to a Alberta RCMP news release issued Saturday night.

Shortly before 7:15 p.m. Saturday, a member of the Lloydminster RCMP crime reduction unit was investigating a weapons complaint that resulted in chasing the suspect, a man, into the Weaver Park Campground. The campground is located on the Saskatchewan side of Lloydminster, a city about 235 kilometres east of Edmonton split by the Alberta-Saskatchewan border.

The man stole an occupied RV on the campground and drove it toward the officer, who fired their gun, police said.

The man collided with parked vehicles while trying to escape, disabling the RV, police said. The officer then arrested him.

The suspect was not injured, but the collision injured people who were in the RV and others nearby, including the police officer, RCMP said.

The man was not injured, but the collision injured people in the RV and others nearby, including the police officer, police said.

RCMP are trying to confirm exactly how many people were hurt, but some did go to hospital, an RCMP spokesperson told CBC News Sunday. The officer is doing O.K. aside from their minor injuries.

Charges for man are pending, the spokesperson said.

Alberta RCMP notified the province's director of law enforcement, who directed the RCMP to investigate the circumstances around the incident.

The RCMP spokesperson confirmed the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT), the provincial police oversight agency that investigates situations in which police conduct may have resulted in serious injury or death, is not examining what happened.

RCMP have initiated their internal review processes to gather a full account of how the incident played out, including police training, policy and response, the news release said.

A heavy police presence will be around the campground as RCMP investigate, the release said.
