The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary arrested three people for assaulting police officers on Thursday, including a "very irate male" who used a block of cheese in the assault.

The events began at 1:30 p.m., when police say they were responding to a report of a disturbance at an apartment building in the west end of St. John's. Officers allegedly witnessed a woman assaulting another woman, and when they went to make an arrest, she struck one of the officers in the face.

About two hours later, a woman spotted a man walking on to her property as she was driving away from it. She turned around and found the man had gone inside her home. Police were called, and during the course of the arrest, he's alleged to have assaulted an officer.

The final event happened just after 9 p.m., when a report came in about a disturbance in the centre city area.

"Upon arrival, officers encountered a very irate male who then assaulted the officers with a block of cheese," reads the overnight report issued by Staff Sgt. Justin Soo. "The male was arrested and conveyed to the St. John's lockup to await court."

All three are charged with assaulting a peace officer and resisting arrest, in addition to other charges stemming from the reasons for the calls.
