Ontario's police watchdog has charged a Peel police officer with dangerous driving causing bodily harm, following an investigation into a collision last August that left a woman seriously injured.

The officer was driving a marked police SUV when he responded to a call on Aug. 28, 2023, according to a news release Thursday from the province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU).

As the officer entered an intersection at Bovaird Drive E. and Dixie Road, he struck a 23-year-old driver, the release said. She was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The officer was also taken to hospital but was not seriously injured, the SIU said in a previous release.

"As the matter is before the courts, and in consideration of the fair trial interests of the accused, the SIU will not provide further comment on the investigation," the Thursday release said.

The officer will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton on May 15.

CBC Toronto has reached out to Peel Regional Police for comment.
